Mini Tennis Coaching at Crowborough is been designed to follow, in the main, the framework laid out by the LTA, progressing from Tots to Mini Red, to Mini Orange to Mini Green then Yellow Groups. CTA Sussex will introduce in 2014 other internationally recognized methods of training young athletes and Tennis Players, where appropriate.
The framework is split into Mini Tennis - ages 3 to 10 and Junior Tennis - ages 11 to 16.
Mini Tennis is a great introduction to the sport for young children between 3 and 10 years old. It’s just like the real thing, but with smaller courts, nets and rackets and lower-bouncing balls.
Tots is for children aged 3 to 5 years old and enables them to learn the basics and how to enjoy the game through a series of fun activities, based on the fundamental areas of balance, co-ordination, agility, movement and eventually racket and ball skills. There are no specific Rally Awards at this stage although players can receive stickers as reward and recognition for trying hard, achieving certain skills and working well with others in the group. Tots play with sponge balls and progress to 19 or 21 inch rackets. The main focus is about making it as much fun as possible whilst learning the ABC's (Agility, Balance, Coordination) of Tennis.
There are three levels of Mini Tennis; Red, Orange and Green, each with there own court size and type of ball. This tailored approach, generally based on age and physical maturity enables players to develop vital skills and techniques at an early age. CTA Sussex appreciate that Children develop at different paces. Therefore Groups will be organized where kids of similar ability train together, not just a similar age.
CTA will be assessing each child at the end of each Term and encouraging friendly competitions and rally awards where appropriate. For those with a keen interest in matchplay, we will arrange more matchplay experiences and help them work on improving their LTA rating.
